About 50 runners and walkers lined up on a beautiful Saturday morning (October 19, 2024) for the McCarthy Brothers Memorial Walk/Run on the boardwalk in Rockaway.
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, this year marked the return of this event thanks to the commitment of Nazareth Principal Rob DiRe, the generosity of our sponsor Peter Sinnot, and the guidance of Board Member Joe Keenan ’73.
The 5K and 1Mile races, which began and ended at the Rockaway Beach Amphitheater, was organized by the Rockaway Track Club thanks to Jimmy McVeigh ’76 and his wife Charmaine who did an outstanding job.
The memorial run is in honor of brothers Eugene T. McCarthy ’73, and Dennis McCarthy. Major Eugene McCarthy died on Feb. 2, 1991, while flying a medevac support mission during Operation Desert Storm, the war with Iraq. Dennis McCarthy was an Immigration Officer and later a Special Agent for the U.S. Customs Service, who died in 2018 of a 9/11-related illness.
The 3 top finishers of the race were: Maura Watson, Ian Carswell, and Sandy McCarthy. For the complete results of the race please click here: McCarthy Brothers 2024 Run/Walk Results Thanks to all the participants for a wonderful day filled with memories and Nazareth spirit!
The total net proceeds of the race were $1,624 and were donated to the Spirit of Nazareth Fund. But – it is not too late to contribute to this Fund in memory of the McCarthy Brothers. Simply click below and mark your donation in Memory of the McCarthy Brothers.
