The Chris Thomas Scholarship is named in memory of Nazareth Regional High School alumnus Chris Thomas, Class of ’77. He was an Advanced Placement student and Co-Captain of the Varsity Basketball team, which won the CHSAA (Catholic High School Athletic Association) championship in 1977. He went on to play for Colgate University before his untimely death in 1980. Chris is remembered to this day for his sense of humor and ready laughter. The scholarship fund, begun in that year, has given over $50,000 to Juniors at Nazareth who excel in academics and sports and need tuition assistance to move on to Senior year and complete their degree at Nazareth.
This year’s winner, Benjamin Talavera ’17 plays Varsity Baseball. In his letter of appreciation for the award Ben wrote: “Throughout middle school my grades were not great, until I began my education at Nazareth. The teaching staff and my coach have made sure I’ve maintained at least an 85 average in order to play. Throughout my time at Nazareth I have grown close with my teammates, and now I don’t look at them as teammates, but as brothers. Thank you very much for choosing me for this scholarship.”
